[...] 2. We take toilet training very slowly in this house. Julianna has been sitting on the toilet occasionally for the last year and a half, and almost a year ago we started putting her on four times a day. But I’ve been procrastinating on toilet training for real, until about six weeks ago, when I realized that the persistent rash she has will only go away if she stops being exposed to the urine. She has been stubborn, resistant, and generally maddening about it. And then we went to Florida, and one day she came over to Christian, patted his leg, and then, looking up at him with those big, sweet eyes, she patted her diaper. It was wholly impractical to try to toilet train at Disney—but the next day we started hitting it in earnest, and on New Year’s Day, she was dry the entire day. We shook our heads and said, Wouldn’t it be ironic if our “delayed” daughter trains herself just like that, after all the headaches we’ve had with Alex? [...]

Well I'm having the opposite problem. Darling Eva has decided that she will NOT go poopie. Period. No amount of bribery, hand-holding, book-reading, or discussion will convince her to go. She grabs her butt, says "my butt hurts!" and refuses to let it out. I can bribe her to SIT on the toilet, but I can not force her to let anything out that tightly squeezed butt.

Oh my goodness! Alex and my Owen (also 4) just sound so much alike! O still wears a diaper at night and I've been told by the doctor that it's normal for kids to still be in one at 5 or even 6 at night. He still has accidents during the day (2 just yesterday!)--even 20 minutes after he's just gone on the potty! It's infuriating and I'm trying to figure out the correct punishment for it. Because, by now, I know that he *knows* when he needs to go, he just doesn't want to stop what he is doing, which I think is very typical of boys. My mom is a teacher and when I was complaining to her one day she reminded me that even once they get to school they still take bathroom breaks at the same time every day. So I have resorted to taking potty breaks at many intervals during the day with him to kind of get him on a schedule. Short of denying him any type of liquid, I'm not sure what else to do! Good luck!

Don't worry, Kate! Mom had Abby potty-trained a couple of years ago, yet at age 5 she still has to wear pullups at night. She will be 6 in Dec. I asked the same question of Mom and she said that their body will tell them to go. Sometimes I wonder, though! I know it worked for me, though I still had accidents even up to age 8 during the night. Hope you have a great day!
