Oh this is so me. I remember telling my spiritual director that I felt called to be a monk! He said, do you think you would have 2 children and a husband if that’s where he wanted you to be?
Then I spent 6 weeks at a monastery studying to be a spiritual director. And at the first appointment with one of the nuns there, she said, this monastery is like a big family. It is harder to live here in community than you think. It’s not all contemplation and solitude. Not at all.
Sigh.
Anyhow, I started scheduling retreat days for myself. Taking half or whole day once a month and being alone. It helped.

yup- often it is those of us who do not feel healed in our emotions and thoughts who are driven to dive deeper into our spirits and live in HIM. We cannot stand to live on the surface. this is the second time a comment and now a post triggered such a response- time for a complimentary post!

As one of the heathen, I think you did the right thing in #7. I’ve moved away from hormonal contraception and I find suggestions like “why don’t you just get on some other kind of birth control” to be grating. (My nurse practitioner is awesome and doesn’t even broach the subject. The nurse for the clinic doesn’t know any better.) I’d really prefer not to antagonize the people at the clinic because I have to deal with them often, so unless I *really* have something to say on the matter, I let it go.

Ditto with church stuff. My denomination might be pro-life but we have some parishioners who are definitely *NOT*. They’ve tried convincing my husband and I that abortion is OK in the Bible (it isn’t mentioned specifically) and they bash those who want to limit the availability of contraception when we’re at Women’s Bible study.

I like your reply to Michael. Seeing beauty and value in both places. And every child is unique and has different needs. Julianna seems happy there, eh?

Great article! I agree with you. Stress is just a part of life, certainly a part of being a parent. I hate polls.

You know, we are defensive about big families because we feel beleaguered, but the point goes for all family sizes. I truly do think things like this make people feel like they have no right to their own feelings, even if they’re super-stressed with one kid.
