In the car after school, we are listening to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (at Alex’s request. I had on NPR.) Alex shouts from the back: “MOMMY, WHEN WE GET HOME, I WANT TO TAKE THE CD OUT OF THE CD PLAYER.
And play it inside, Alex?
AND PUT IT IN ITS CASE.
AND TAKE IT INSIDE.
AND TAKE IT OUT OF ITS CASE.
AND PUT IT IN THE, THE, THE, UM, THE, I WANT TO PUT IT IN THE, THE, UH, IN THE, UH…
The CD player, Alex?
NO, I WANT TO PUT IT IN THE NUMBER ONE SPOT IN THE CD PLAYER.
AND PLAY IT.
(Whew–finally!) Someday I will get all teary-eyed over these conversations? Is that what you’re thinking right now?
Yeah, well…maybe. We’ll see. In the meantime, I managed not to interrupt him (despite appearances). I let him get all the way through it on his own. It took two miles on the interstate. Plus the entrance ramp. 🙂
Hehe – such a good exercise in patience!
Are YOU ready? 😉
OMG, this happens at our house ALL THE TIME. We’ve finally started asking our 7-year-old, when this begins, to stop for a sec, think about what he wants to say, and then start again. Otherwise he sort of gets caught in this word-finding verbal maze and just wanders around for literally minutes at a time. (Okay, minutes, not the end of the world, but I’m sure you know what I mean!) Our daughter we still let wander a bit, but he does much better when he stops to retrace. 🙂
Hilarius. Especially since I wasn’t the one who had to listen to it patiently!
