It was early afternoon on Thursday. My mother-in-law and I had just put the big kids down for naps, and Nicholas was fussing, wanting to be held. Feeling a little guilty, I left Mom doing dishes and settled back onto the couch with my baby resting against my chest at about a 45-degree angle. He snuggled down for a few seconds, and then suddenly, he picked up his head.
It was hard work for a little guy 14 days old, but he bobbed there gamely for a good ten or fifteen seconds before plopping back down, leaving his mommy breathless with wonder.
You may think that I’m easily impressed, and you would be right. Welcome to the new motherhood of Kate Basi.
All that Alex learned instinctively, Julianna has had to be taught…a long, laborious process. Over time, we have adjusted to her pace, and I, for one, have learned to accept it as normal. I knew that having a normal child would involve another adjustment. But nothing could prepare me for the sheer, giddy wonder of seeing the process unfold through eyes enlightened by the experience of the last two years.
Oh, how beautiful life is.
