A note to my baby at 12 weeks
What I know about you after three ultrasounds:
You have a big head. All children do at this age, but I’m going to say that yours is going to remain big, because your daddy and your big brother have big heads.
You have well-defined cheekbones, either because you’re only 3 inches long and you just don’t have any baby fat yet, or because you have the Italian genes. Let’s call it Italian.
You know how to open your mouth, because I saw you do it. (That was my favorite part.)
You are a wiggly little squirt! The medical staff has never seen a baby squirm so much this early! Whew, what is the 3rd trimester going to be like?
Your nose looks to be the same cute button nose as your siblings’, which makes me happy, because I love noses. They’re so munchable.
You do not have any markers for “chromosomal abnormality.” (I’m ashamed I even need to write that, but it was after all the purpose of this most recent photo session.)
What I do not know:
The features of your face, although there was a moment when I looked at the front view picture when I could almost fill in the details of that skeletal, alien visage.
Your gender…nor, God willing, will I, until that wonderful moment when I see you face to face next spring.
Your name, regardless of gender…we’re usually pretty quick with names, but not this time. Daddy and I have to negotiate what both of us find beautiful.
The person you will become, in interests, gifts, and personality. But no matter how many ultrasounds I have, I won’t know that till well after birth…
…though I do think the 1st trimester wiggles must be some indication.
