7 Quick Takes, vol. 141

Those who have been reading for a while will know that I’m constantly coming up with new ways to overload my schedule. 🙂 I can always make room for one more commitment if it is connected to those topics about which I’m most passionate–like, for instance, advocacy for special needs. I’ve been given the opportunity to introduce Julianna to the 3rd-year medical students on ped’s rotation here at the school of medicine: to put a human face on the medical condition they learn about. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am about that. Any suggestions for interactive resources?

The baby’s kicks are getting stronger. So fun!

I saw this quote the other day, which perfectly sums up what I’ve been trying to put into words myself lately:

“Do you know how to recognize in which Our Lord visits your soul?  A word read or heard, perhaps even by chance, an edifying example, an interior inspiration, a new light which makes you see your faults more clearly and opens new horizons of virtue and of good–all are visits from Jesus.  And you? How do you correspond?  Is your soul sensitive to these lights, to these admonitions?  Do you not sometimes turn your gaze away, fearing that the light you have glimpsed may ask you for sacrifices which are too painful for your self-love?
-Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene  (thanks to Theresa for quoting this on her own blog.

I’ve been pondering the connection points between sexual “liberation,” contraception and abortion lately, and have had a few pointed discussions…which led me to this blog post. It’s so good, I had to give it its own take. I give you: Sex, lies and the pro-choice movement, from a blog called Mosaic Synapse.

Okay, enough with the links. Alex has finally made peace with first grade not being kindergarten. He’s coming home with lots of work now–real work, that involves math and writing and reading. They get graded with stars, check-plus, and…well, I haven’t seen anything lower than that, actually, so I’m not sure what comes below check-plus. But when he gets check-plus instead of star, I find myself feeling a need to figure out what he got marked down for. I am such a recovering straight-A student, you know that?

And by the way, what he gets marked down for is penmanship. Christian tells me I have wretched handwriting, so I guess I’m to blame for that part of my firstborn’s personality, too. 🙂 (Disclaimer: I can write neatly, I just write in too much of a hurry 95% of the time. But most of the scrapbook journaling looks very nice, thank you very much.)

I’m playing single parent tonight (Thursday) as I write most of these takes…which means, naturally, that it’s the perfect time for Nicholas to get sick with croup. I already lost half a night’s sleep last night, and he slept exactly one hour at nap today. I’m just dreading tonight.

Have a good weekend!
