On Thursday, Abigail at Diary of a New Mom nominated me for the Sweet Friend award–having never been nominated for anything, I, like Abigail, have to say–how cool is that????? It comes at a good time, too, because the “rule” is I have to tell you ten things that make me happy. And after seventeen days (and counting) of one to three sick, crabby and needy kids in my house, I’m having trouble focusing on things that make me happy! In fact, it’s taken me all weekend to a) come up with something to write about and b) find time to do it. But yesterday afternoon, we turned on the TV and found the U.S. Figure Skating championships on. Alex came over and watched with me, and every time the ice dancers did a lift, he said, “Wow! That was cool!” It made me so happy to share my love with my son. And I thought, you know what? I’m going to share some of my favorite skating programs, because they really do make me happy. And let me add this: I LOVE YouTube.
- I have to start where it all began for me: with Katarina Witt’s long program at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics. I was in the fourth grade and it was the first Olympics I watched. I fell in love with how beautiful she was, how beautiful her costume was–but also with the beauty of the sport.
- Oksana Baiul skates to Saint-Saens “The Swan” in 1994 in Lillehammer. I never teach that piece to a flute student without thinking of this performance.
- Mishkutenok & Dmitriev (Lillehammer 1994) skate to Rachmaninov. I have adored Gordeeva & Grinkov forever, and yet I had to admit that in Lillehammer, M&D did better.
- Nonetheless, G&G’s program was also spectacular…and there was something about those two that just made me happy to watch, always. At my first Stars on Ice, we sat in the rafters of the Kiel Center, and the whole thing seemed distant and unreal–except these two. When I saw them skate in person, I really knew that they and I were existing in the same space. I actually grieved when Sergei Grinkov died so suddenly. So I include this program here among the best figure skating I have ever seen.
- Stars on Ice really made me appreciate professional skating. Free from all the nonsense that surrounds judging, skating really becomes art. There was Kristi Yamaguchi’s “Doop Doop” program–another one I was thrilled to get to see in person. (Looking back, how ’90’s is that outfit?)
- And Underhill and Martini’s “On My Own.” (The commentator will eventually shut up; bear with it.)7
- Then there are the men. My problem is, I don’ t care for the new guys AT ALL. But how can you resist Kurt and Scotty? It’s figure skating meets Stomp! Despite their virtuoso physical skills, they don’t take themselves seriously; I think that’s what I like so much about watching these two guys.
- Along those lines: here’s Hat Trick (Scotty) and Clown (Kurt).
- And another Hat Trick, this time with Torvill and Dean. I came by an appreciation of ice dancing very late, so I don’t have as many favorites in that area–but I love watching it now.
- Last but certainly not least, I adore Jamie Sale and David Pelletier. This was their Olympic program in 2002, where I “met” them. The judging scandal, in which Berezhnaya & Sikharulidze were awarded the gold despite not being as good as S &P, was the impetus behind a major rework of the judging & scoring of figure skating.
There you go. If you follow every link I put in here, it’ll take you an hour to read this post…but I hope you’ll be happier at the end of it!
And now, because everyone needs a reason to reflect on what makes them happy, I bestow the Sweet Friend on…

This is so cool! I had no idea you could find this stuff on YouTube. I’ll have to check out some of these. Thanks for playing! 🙂
I am watching figure skating right now–so fun! When I took Russian in college, my Russian name was Ekaterina–definitely chosen because of Ekaterina Gordeeva, whom i adore:-)
Ah, I was waiting to see if Torvill and Dean’s hat dance would make it! My other favorite is the Kristi Yamaguchi performance where she wore all the crazy brightly colored clothes – the top looked like a marching band uniform.
Yup, that one’s on there too Celia. #5. (I know, there were a zillion links and the print is small.)
Michelle–I did NOT know that about you!
Wow. I should have guessed that this ws available on YouTube but I didn’t. Thanks for the pre-bedtime story fun with my daughter tonight!
oh my gosh!! How sweet, sweet, sweet of you to nominate me! Thank you Kate!!
Tomorrow I’ll take the time to watch your skating videos. I love figure skating and didn’t realize (but should have realized) they’re available for viewing on YouTube–duh!! Thanks for posting 🙂 🙂 🙂
ok, now on to ten things that make me happy…hmmmm….
Thanks for the award.
I must confess that I haven’t quite gotten through the links, though I made sure to watch 1 & 5 since I hadn’t seen either. I only remember figure skating starting in the early 90s (great timing for lack of scandal, no?) and never saw Witt’s glory days.
You know, in later years I liked many of the other girls much better. But she made quite an impression on me when I was a little girl. These days, the pairs are far and away my favorite.
Did I tell you I’m taking ice skating lessons?! Less to look like Katrina (one step at a time) and more to be as comfortable looking as Ed on the ice. I can hold my own on the ice, but only as far as moving forward and staying out of people’s way.
I’m happy to say, 3 weeks in, I can ‘swizzle’ backwards. (How fun is it to learn something called ‘swizzle’?)
And she started teaching us spins! Despite my comment on Katarina this is exciting! I’m not very brave though so it’s really not thrilling to watch.
Besides, I have to skate on one foot for 3 seconds to pass this pre-beginning class. It turns out, after an hour of practice I can skate on one foot for 3 (or 4) seconds, but it’s still pretty wobbly- so I think I’ll concentrate on that for awhile longer.
Oh man. I’ve been so MIA… Thank you for the nomination! Once I get caught up on everyone, I’ll give it a go!
Chrissy–that is TOTALLY AWESOME! I don’t even know what a swizzle is.
Amy–I’ve been wondering where you were! I was about to email you.
A swizzle sounds more exciting than it is. It’s basically pushing your feet apart and bringing them together to move forward and backward.
Today was cross overs. My right foot is a control hog and my left foot is not a team player. Sigh.
But it’s only been 4 weeks- patience is a virtue.
Thanks so much for sending me the link to this post! I haven’t seen some of these routines in YEARS – I can’t wait to check them all out again! Scott and Kurt are still my two favorites; there’s just nobody like them. And I still can’t watch a G&G performance without crying!
I will say, though, that I have never been able to like Oksana Baiul. Just can’t make it happen!
Oksana went through a pretty nasty spell there after the gold medal, and she’s never quite regained what I loved about that Swan performance. But I think that whole screwy year with Tanya and Nancy et al was a hard year to like *anything* out of. Except maybe Paul Wylie. 🙂
